San Kata

 

Section I  (kneeling - kneeling attacks)

 

Oshi Taoshi -  Uke raises right hand to upper left for strike.  Tori intercepts and pushes to rear corner off-balance.  Tori cycles back into oshi-taoshi, steps twice and pins arm to mat.

 

Aigamae Ate -  Uke strikes roundhouse temple blow with right fist.  Tori comes up inside with left-hand strike to face.  Backfall.

 

Kote Gaeshi -  Uke punches right to stomach.  Tori opens to right, cradling fist with left and letting right hand out.  Tori turns holding wrist with both hands, threatening eyes, then continues throwing kote-gaeshi.  Tori steps through turning uke face down, and locks wrist in kote-mawashi.

 

Sukui Nage -  Uke attempts to pin Tori by grabbing both wrists.  Tori rises to knees with hands on thighs.  As Uke rises, Tori cocks wrists, breaks hands in and up, pushing against the insides of Uke's arms.  Tori throws in wheel to right, scooping feet to avoid being kicked.

 

 

Section I continued  (kneeling - standing attacks)

 

Tenkai Kote Hineri -  Uke attempts right hand choke from behind.  Tori catches hand and clasps to chest with both hands.  Turn over left hand to grasp Uke's hand in tenkai.  Tori rises, pushing out in front, then turns to left side, drop to mat and lock.  (Choke is hadaka-jime.)

 

Shiho Nage -  Uke grabs left wrist with right hand.  Tori cocks left wrist and traps Uke's wrist with right hand.  Push up and turn, throwing shiho-nage.

 

Gedan Ate -  Uke grabs right sleeve with left hand and tries to lift.  Tori allows right arm to be lifted and comes up on toes, directing force of lift to inside of Uke's knee.

 

Hiji Kime -  Uke grabs for collar from front with right hand.  Tori rises and intercepts arm, turns to side and throws.

  

San Kata

 

Section II  (standing - one hand grabs)

 

Kote Mawashi -  Uke grabs left collar with right hand.  Tori clasps collar underneath with left and steps back left, with right uppercut to make space.  Cover Uke's right hand with right and turn 180° to right, bringing left hand over Uke's arm.  Drop left pinkie finger to collapse Uke's right elbow, and turn back to face Uke, forcing Uke into squat with kote-mawashi.  Let Uke rise out of squat and throw.

 

Tenkai Nage -  Uke grabs left wrist with right hand.  Tori does 7th release, keeping contact with wrist and palming the hand to turn into kote-mawashi, keeping arm straight.  Place right knife-hand on back of Uke's neck to keep Uke from rising, and step with wrist to throw.

 

Gyakugamae Ate -  Uke grabs right sleeve with left hand.  Tori steps back and does 3rd release, allowing right arm to swing up and over Uke's arm, then curls to the stomach, breaking Uke into a squat.  Throw with right gyaku-gamae-ate as Uke rises.

 

Hiji Kime -  Uke grabs left wrist with right hand.  Tori does 4th release, swinging Uke around and bringing arm up to hook with right arm ("thread the needle").  Throw by stepping forward and lowering arm to support and allow uke to breakfall.

 

 

Section II continued  (standing - other attacks)

 

Mae Otoshi -  Uke grasps collar with both hands, crossed to choke.  Tori clasps left wrist with left hand and steps back to the left, making distance with right uppercut.  Duck left under Uke's arms, keeping hold of Uke's wrist in kote-hineri and turning so that right arm is across Uke's side.  Throw with mae-otoshi.  (Choke is kata-juji-jime.)

 

Mae Otoshi -  Uke grabs right wrist with right hand and steps around to attempt choke from behind with left.  Tori does 5th release, bringing right hand to chest for kote-hineri, and left arm across Uke's body.  Throw with mae-otoshi.  (Choke is ushiro-kube-gatame.)

 

Tenkai Kote Hineri -  Uke grabs with both arms from behind in bear hug.  Tori steps to forward  left, turning arms convex.  Cover Uke's left hand with right hand, and tilt upper body to make an outside opening.  Hold tenkai-kote-hineri and push away as you step out, then turn in front and take down to mat and lock.

 

Kata Gatame -  Uke strikes right yokomen uchi to left temple.  Tori evades slightly right, guides with right hand down to Uke's right ankle, and pushes on inside of leg so Uke falls.  Tori directs left-hand chop at Uke's face, then catches Uke's left-hand block.  Pull Uke over onto face and lock arm between knees, turning.

 


 

San Kata

 

Section III  (knife defense)

 

Ushiro Ate -  Uke strikes straight down overhead with right.  Tori evades left and turns, blocking shoulder.  Uke spins to face, and Tori pushes left to throw in backfall (garuma).

 

Gyakugamae Ate -  Uke strikes right yokomen at left temple.  Tori comes up inside with left-hand strike to eyes.

 

Oshi Taoshi -  Uke strikes right-handed at right temple.  Tori steps forward right to block with both hands.  Turn right hand over so fingers are down, during tenkan step to right rear, throwing oshi-taoshi.  Ensure that Uke's hand is palm-up.  Bend arm, bringing knife-hand in and breaking

grip, then straighten to flick knife away.  Lock with knees.

 

Ushiro Ate -  Uke strikes gut thrust upward with right.  Tori evades left and blocks shoulder from behind to throw back otoshi.

 

 

Ude Gatame -  Uke strikes for left kidney.  Tori steps left, taking Uke's elbow in crook of the arm to off-balance point.  Take a tenkan step to right, trapping arm against neck and shoulder.  Take knife and hold to throat.

 

Kote Gaeshi -  Uke strikes for right kidney.  Tori steps right, blocking with both hands.  Continue moving till Uke spins you around to kote-gaeshi position at full extension.  Turn Uke over onto face, lock arm and take knife.

 

Tenkai Kote Hineri -  Uke hides knife in jacket, comes within ma-ai, and begins to pull knife with right hand.  Tori grabs left hand and evades right, performing tenkai-kote-hineri and lock.

 

Gedan Ate -  Uke strikes straight down overhead with right.  Tori evades right and traps knife hand to Uke's right ankle, pushing on inside of leg so Uke falls.  Tori grabs right foot as in kote-hineri and turns Uke over by sweeping the whole leg, trapping the left foot underneath.  As Uke tries to rise, sweep left wrist and drop Uke flat on chest, then step around to lock arm between knees as in kata-gatame (Standing #8).

 


 

San Kata

 

Section IV  (sword defense)

 

Mae Otoshi -  Uke attacks straight down (men).  Tori evades right, puts right hand through elbow, and follows down to the hilt, extending to throw and take sword.

 

Shiho Nage -  Uke attacks men.  Tori evades left, with right hand on hip.  Push right to hilt, continue up and throw right shiho-nage.  Take sword and threaten overhead, blade up.

 

Aigamae Ate -  Uke thrusts at throat (tsuki).  Tori evades left, blocking sword with left hand.  Step in with right and throw with clothesline.

 

Oshi Taoshi -  Uke holds sword overhead then attacks right side (do jodan).  Tori blocks right, then cycles back into oshi-taoshi, throwing and taking sword.

 

Hiji Kujiki -  Uke attacks men.  Evade left, blocking hilt with right hand.  Turn hips in and push hilt up and into Uke.  Draw sword up along body, throwing backwards.  Take sword and threaten overhead.

 

 

Section V, Part A  (jyo defense)

 

Gyaku Gamae Ate -  Uke thrusts at solar plexus.  Tori evades right, performs gyaku-gamae-ate right, taking jyo in left hand.

 

Shomen Ate -  Tori evades left, performs shomen-ate left, taking jyo in right hand.

 

Hishigi -  Tori evades right, block jyo with right hand then exchange hands so right is between Uke's hands.  Push up with Uke's motion to lock elbow then drop, throwing right as in mae-otoshi.

 

Hiji Hishigi -  Tori evades left, grasp jyo with left hand.  Reverse stick vertically and grab with right hand between Uke's hands.  Bring up other end of stick to push at Uke's face, throwing in back fall.

 

Irimi Mae Otoshi -  Uke strikes overhead.  Tori evades and enters to right, grasping jyo with both hands, right hand between Uke's.  Float Uke up and then throw in forward roll.

  

San Kata

 

Section V, Part B  (offensive jyo)

 

Migi Sumi Otoshi -  Tori thrusts left.  Uke left posture, grabs stick with both hands.  Break balance forward and throw off end of stick in right breakfall along the line of feet.  Uke stays down in all throws in this set.

 

Hidari Sumi Otoshi -  As before, but throw fails.  Reverse direction and throw off end of stick as before.

 

Shomen Tsuki -  As before, but throw fails twice.  Cycle stick into Uke, pushing down into a squat.  Raise right hand to upward position as Uke rises, then push into back fall.

 

Mae Otoshi -  Uke in right posture.  Break balance up, then bring down to throw.  Uke keeps grip with both hands and takes big fall, letting go with right hand to slap.

 

 

Shiho Nage -  Uke left posture, pulls stick.  Push through keeping balance break, pivot under stick, and throw.  Uke pivots under stick and takes left breakfall off end of stick.

 

Kaiten Nage -  Uke right posture, pulls stick as before, resists stick going overhead.  Pivot under stick keeping off-balance, drop stick down towards uke's chest, throwing in back fall.

 

Ude Kujiki -  Uke grabs stick with right hand only.  Do 1st release with stick and cycle back in, placing end of stick behind arm against scapula.  Push off end of stick in left breakfall along line of feet.

 

Kokyu Nage -  Uke lifts stick overhead.  Break balance in big circle so Uke loses grip, then cycle back down to sweep the feet from behind.  Finish in squatting position with stick coming all the way to vertical as Uke takes back fall.

  

San Kata

 

Section VI  (offensive swords)

 

Ai Uchi Men -  Uke cuts down on head (men).  Tori waits until last instant and cuts uke men, deflecting the strike.  Cut directly forward; do not try to deflect uke's sword.

 

Hidari Men -  Uke attacks men.  Tori has time for half-step, evades right and cuts men with step.

 

Migi Men -  Uke attacks men.  Tori has time for full step, evades left and cuts men.

 

Tsuki -  Uke attacks men.  As uke raises sword, tori steps forward immediately with thrust to uke's throat.

 

 

Do -  Uke attacks men.  Tori evades right and walks through, dragging sword across uke's torso.

 

Kote Nuki Kote -  Uke steps slightly left with right foot and attacks the wrist with short motion.  Tori steps slightly left and cuts uke's wrist.

 

Kaeshi Men -  Uke attacks men.  Tori evades left, blocking cut with shinogi.  Allow force of blow to whip sword around and cut uke men.

 

Hasso Waki Gamae -  Uke in waki-gamae, Tori in hasso.  Uke attacks left knee.  Tori steps back left, dropping sword to block cut.  Uke brings sword up sideways to thrust at chest left, Tori rides to block.  Uke pushes sword down to pass over, then comes up to thrust sideways at chest right.  Tori passes under and rides cut to block, then carries down to cross underneath and throws the sword up.  Uke cuts men, Tori steps left to block with shinogi.  Uke raises sword to jodan and cuts men, Tori evades right and cuts men.
