Kuzushi-no-kata This is an early kata devised by Tomiki sensei. The emphasis is on clean lines of off-balance, the eight directions (happo no kuzushi). I nicknamed this the "rice grain kata" because it was demonstrated with tape on the mat marking a plus sign with four half-length strips on the diagonals, resembling the kanji for rice grain ("KOME"). 1. Iriminage Uke strikes right hand at tori's right temple (outside yokomen uchi). Tori makes kuzushi with right hand (aigamae), striking with tegatana to 45 degrees left (uke's front right) along the line of the attack, and moves behind uke's arm to enter into iriminage. Uke reacts 180 degrees (the opposite diagonal). Variation 1A: Tori grasps the collar and drops his elbow in between uke's shoulder blades. Uke takes backfall. Variation 1B: Uke turns and takes a forward roll. Variation 1C: Uke turns, tori takes uke across hip and throws koshi nage. 2. Kotegaeshi Uke strikes right hand at tori's right temple (outside yokomen uchi). Tori makes kuzushi with left hand (gyakugamae), striking with tegatana to 45 degrees right (uke's front left). Uke reacts 180 degrees, but tori takes uke's wrist and throws kotegaeshi to 90 degrees. Variation 2A: Uke takes forward airfall on the body drop. Variation 2B: Throw on the rise as uke's wrist comes up into tori's grasp. 3. Ushiro-ate Uke strikes right hand at tori's left temple (inside yokomen uchi). Tori makes kuzushi with right hand (aigamae), striking with tegatana to 45 degrees left and scooping the arm to uke's front left as in 2nd release as uke recovers. Tori passes outside and rolls into ushiro-ate. Variation 3A: Tori passes under arms and wraps the chest. Backfall. Variation 3B: Tori keeps hand above uke's arms and hooks the shoulders. Variation 3C: Tori goes under arms but raises right arm as in katagatame, and throws iriminage. This is another alternative to protect against an elbow strike in the original version. 4. Sumiotoshi Uke strikes right hand at tori's left temple (inside yokomen uchi). Tori makes kuzushi with left hand (gyakugamae), preempting the attack and striking with tegatana or forearm 45 degrees front left (uke's rear right) corner. Variation 4A: One-handed sumiotoshi backfall. Variation 4B: Secondary shomen-ate hand, keeping left step sumiotoshi. Variation 4C: Intercept attack early & high, step under and take down with hikitaoshi to uke's rear right corner. NOTE these last two are transcribed from video and may be variations. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=birQIz9YyDE, www.pathfinderaikido.co.uk 5. Ude hineri (aigamae)? Uke strikes right hand at tori's center (mune tsuki). Tori makes kuzushi with both hands, moving to right (uke's front left), steps under and performs right-hand shihonage. 6. Ude gaeshi (gyakugamae)? Uke strikes right hand at tori's center (mune tsuki). Tori makes kuzushi with right hand, moving to left (uke's front right), turns left and throws kotegaeshi.
